Georgia’s Kitchen: Snow Ice Cream
Keota, Iowa – Winter has kicked in full-force and with the cold temperatures we have finally gotten some snow.
This time of year brings back memories of, as a child, making snow ice cream. For many years it was one of the easiest & cheapest ways for people to make ice cream. All you need is: fresh clean snow, whole milk, sweetened condensed milk or half & half, some sweetener, and flavoring. Vanilla is a favorite, though you can use anything that sounds good to you. Some ideas are cinnamon, chocolate, strawberry, or various fruit flavors.
One of my favorites was maple-flavored snow ice cream and today I don’t pass it up very often!
Though I do not remember exact measurements, the basics are to gather snow in a large container. Add sweetener, milk, and flavoring. Stir together. Eat quickly, because it melts quickly!
There are a variety of recipes for snow ice cream on the internet. Many can be found by searching Google for “Snow Ice Cream”. I was surprised at how many people enjoy this simple pleasure. It is a fun thing you can do with your young child or grandchildren. But you don’t have to be young to enjoy it. I just might make some on Friday. I hear we’re in for a bunch of snow!
Inexpensive Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 cup + 2 Tbs instant dry nonfat milk
1/2 cup warm water
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Place water and milk in saucepan, and stir to dissolve. Add sugar and heat over low heat just to dissolve the sugar, but not to cook. When all the sugar and milk have completely dissolved, and the mixture is thickened somewhat, add vanilla. This can be used in any of your recipes calling for sweetened condensed milk. It should be kept refrigerated until used.
Chocolate Syrup for the kids milk
Cook over low heat , stirring until mixture is thick & smooth:
1 cup cocoa or 4 squares chocolate
2 c. cold water
Add & stir until dissolved
2 cups sugar
1/4 tsp salt
Boil 3 minutes.
Add: 1 tsp vanilla. Pour into 2 pint jars & seal.
If cocoa is used the syrup will keep indefinitely. Note: This would be good over your ice cream!
