Sign is part of life

Sign Language Class Starting in Oskaloosa at Smokey Row meeting room each Tuesday from 6 to 7 pm until October 26, 2010
Chelsea (Evans) Doak, local resident will be holding classes on sign language starting tomorrow at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa. Chelsea was born deaf, but it wasn’t discovered until she was 1 year of age. Her parents learned sign language and starting using it with Chelsea right away.
Chelsea graduate from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 2004. She is a stay at home mom of 3 children. She has received much help and support over time from many friends and family to start to teach sign language to those that have a desire. Chelsea now has the help of a Cochlear Implant, and is able to “live the hearing world” now with it help.
One may wonder why it would be an advantage to learn sign language. Chelsea explained “It’s such a wonderful feeling for deaf people out there to come across hearing people that knows sign language. I hope that I can help my students put a smile on someone’s face. You just never know who you might run into. Sign language is not only for communicating with deaf people; It’s a way for babies and young children to communicate their needs and wants. Its also a great benefit for hearing children and adults as well!”
I asked Chelsea about her most memorable experience in teaching sign so far has been. “I would have to say that my most memorable moment to date would be watching my oldest son, Carson, sign “more” in his high chair at 8 months old. I couldn’t have been more proud.”
