Statesmen Dropped by Bobcats

Peru, Neb.–The William Penn women’s basketball team failed to recover from a slow start as it fell 84-54 to Peru State in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday.

WPU (4-22, 3-19 Heart), which was outshot 49.3%-30.0%, trailed big early and could not overcome the deficit.

The visitors gave up 11 unanswered points to open the afternoon and eventually trailed 24-7 at the end of the first period.

The Statesmen trimmed the margin to 14 in the second quarter, but could come no closer in a game where they were outrebounded 43-34 and committed one more turnover (18-17) than PSC. Although it lost the battle of the boards, WPU actually owned a 7-3 advantage in second-chance points. Unfortunately, that edge was negated by being outscored 22-9 in points off mistakes.

William Penn made seven three-pointers (only five for the Bobcats), but both teams were well under 30% from behind the arc (WPU was 24.1%, PSC was 26.3%).

Alyssa Hames (Jr., Ackley, Iowa, Psychology) headed her crew with 13 points, while Mercer Roberts (Sr., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wellness and Recreation) (11) and Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Sports Management) (10) also hit the double-digit mark.

Aysia Arrowood (Jr., Wichita, Kan., Sports Management) and Aiesha Feagins (Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas, Applied Mathematics) managed seven points as well.

Amaria Turner (So., Des Moines, Iowa, Human Services) matched Feagins with six rebounds and Joslyn Herbeck (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis., Sociology) tallied three assists.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Wednesday as it hosts Heart foe Clarke in its home finale at 5:30 p.m.
