Second Annual Farm To Table Event Benefit 4-H
ISU Extension and Outreach, Mahaska County, 4H Honor Council and Mahaska County Farm Bureau partnered together to put on the second annual Farm to Table Event in Mahaska County. The event featured foods from local producers who also provided education and background about their farm businesses. Each course of the meal came from local growers and producers including Frisian Farms, Jager Land and Livestock, VerSteegh Brothers Farms, Pleasant Grove Homestead, Riverside Farms, and Dutch Bee Honey Farm. The food was deliciously prepared by Kyle Brown at Grate Expectations Catering. The menu included a variety of cheese, nut and fruit charcuterie boards, side salad of fresh spinach and lettuce greens with a honey vinaigrette dressing, smoked pork loin, grilled beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, and roasted veggies. A honey pound cake rounded out the delectable meal as dessert.
The guitarist, S. Sean Six, played beautiful background music during the event which was held in the Bradbury Hall at the Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum. Decorations were donated by Lisa Van Gilst at Silver Elements Events. 4-H Honor Council members served the food while the attendees were able to sit and socialize with each other. Sponsors of the Farm to Table dinner were Mahaska County Farm Bureau, MidWest One Bank, James McNaul; Farm Bureau Financial Services, Mahaska Drug, Bank Iowa, Jackson Seed, LLC and Fareway. Their donations made it possible for 4-H Honor Council to raise money to go toward their 2023 community service projects.
With funds from last year’s Farm to Table event, 4-H Honor Council hosted a workshop for 4-H members to make bucket seats that also house first aid kits. Members are making more of these kits to donate to classrooms in local schools.
