Laura Slagter

Oskaloosa. Laura Slagter, 88, of Des Moines, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Calvin Community Center in Des Moines. She was born June 7, 1922 at Leighton, the daughter of John and Engelene DeKock Engelhoven. On July 30, 1941, Laura was united in marriage to George Slagter at Oskaloosa, and George died March 29, 2007. Early in their married life, they farmed in Mahaska County.
She then worked as a bookkeeper at Hawkeye Lumber in Oskaloosa. Laura later worked at the Mahaska County ASCS office for twenty years before retiring. She was a long time member of the Central Reformed Church, Oskaloosa, and had been active as a volunteer with Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary, Homemaker Healthcare, and at the old Webster Elementary School. She enjoyed tending her garden and reading.

Her family includes her two sons and their wives: Michael and Colleen McDermott Slagter of Clive, Iowa and Lee and Jan Slagter of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Todd Slagter, Jennifer (& Ryan) Fisher, Chad Slagter, and Leah (& Todd) Rosso; and two great grandchildren: Lily and Olive Rosso. Also surviving are two sisters and their husbands: Edna (and Leland) Fynaardt of Sully, and Shirley (and Jerry) Bruxvoort of Oskaloosa.

Besides her husband, Laura was preceded in death by her parents; a sister: Neva Vogelaar; and two brothers: Virgil and Harley Engelhoven.

Funeral services for Laura Slagter will be Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Don DeGlopper officiating. There will be a Family Prayer Service Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. in the fellowship hall in the basement of the church. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
