YMCA Fitness Director Achieves Y-USA Strengthening & Conditioning Trainer Certification

Oskaloosa, January 9, 2014 – The Mahaska County YMCA is pleased to announce Ryan Harkema, Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Director, is certified as an Instructor for the Y-USA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning course. This course is designed for YMCA fitness center staff. The course content includes member service and orientation procedures; leadership and relationship building strategies for working with members; exercise science and practical applications; and exercise instruction for strength, flexibility and cardiovascular training. The course includes practical sessions using various exercise equipment, case studies and a written exam.

“Ryan has been an invaluable leader at our YMCA for three years. I am grateful for his commitment to developing his fitness team and providing quality professional development opportunities for them,” said Dawn Collins, Executive Director.

The Mahaska County YMCA is an active member of the Iowa YMCA Alliance. The Alliance is committed to ensuring quality professional development is available across the state. Harkema now will provide training for YMCA staff in southeast Iowa on a regular basis.
