WPU Takes Silver at First Tourney of Spring Season

Salina, Kan.–The Statesmen men’s golf team had three individuals in the top 10 as it finished high at the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
William Penn placed second out of seven teams with a two-day score of 600 (301-299) at the par-70 Salina Country Club. Host Kansas Wesleyan, which like WPU, is also receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, won the event at 684 (291-293).
KWU’s Ben Hadden topped the 41-player field at two-over 142 (72-70).
Oliver Stanway (Jr., Leicester, England, Sports Management) carded a two-under 68 to stand as the tournament leader after 18 holes, but slipped back in the standings to tie for third overall at 145 (68-77).
Zachary Chegwidden (Jr., Essex, England, Business Management) was one shot behind his teammate, ending up fifth at 146 (73-73). Spencer Tucker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was in the top 10 as well, tying for 10th at 155 (77-78).
Oscar Florez Martinez (So., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) used a strong second-round 71 to move up to 14th at 156 (85-71), while Juan Lugo (Fr., Lecheria, Venezuela), in his collegiate debut, tied for 19th at 161 (83-78) to wrap up the varsity scoring.
Peter Frederiksen (Sr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering), in a tie for 17th at 160 (80-80), and Tony Rocha (Jr., West Branch, Iowa, Business Management), in a tie for 27th at 166 (83-83), competed as individuals as well.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Fulton, Mo. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the William Woods Invitational. Play will be contested at Tanglewood Golf Course.
