WPU Splits Triangular with Central, Schreiner
Oskaloosa–In its final action before the conference tournament, the Statesmen men’s wrestling team experienced some positives and some negatives as it split a pair of non-conference duals Wednesday.
WPU (7-7) opened the night with a 29-10 setback to Central, but closed it out with a 52-6 victory over Schreiner (Texas).
After falling behind 10-0 against the Dutch, the hosts got on the board as 149-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Fr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Undecided) took care of Robert Areyano in an 11-1 major decision.
Matheson Meade (Fr., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) then drew his team even closer at 165, pinning Colby Tool in a time of 3:23. Unfortunately, the remainder of the matches went in favor of Central.
Nearly everyone got into the fun against the Mountaineers as the Statesmen earned points in nine of the 10 bouts.
125-pounder Nadhelo Charles-Pierre (Sr., Miramar, Fla., Sports Management) started it off by earning a forfeit on Senior Night.
Brise Bennett (So., Morgantown, W.Va., Business Management) then dispatched Domingo Davila in a 15-2 major decision at 133 pounds. Hector Diaz (Fr., Miami, Fla., Secondary Education) added six more points with a forfeit at 141.
Troy Mita (Fr., San Jose, Calif., Nursing) successfully handled Naseer Willis, pinning him late in the match (6:37) at 149 pounds, while 157-pounder Steven Skewes (Fr., Duchesne, Utah, Exercise Science) and 165-pounder Michael Baker (So., Underwood, Iowa, Elementary Education) were on the mat a considerably shorter time. Skewes pinned Jesus Cervantes in 35 seconds, while Baker won by fall over Nick Hammond in 1:20.
Mason Walters (Fr., Independence, Mo., Exercise Science) tacked on another first-period pin (1:45) against Micheal Montalvo.
Jesse Schwery (Fr., Panama, Iowa) received the squad’s last forfeit at 184 pounds, and Branson Bottorff (So., Mackinaw, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) scored William Penn’s final points by receiving a win via disqualification over Christian Prehar.
