Topeka, Kan.–The Statesmen women’s bowling team finished high in the standings as it competed at the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn was fourth out of 20 teams with 8,138 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. Wichita State (Kan.) was first with 8,843 pins.

As the #4 seed, the navy and gold qualified for the bracket competition. The squad opened with a win over Baker in the quarterfinals, but was ousted by eventual champion Wichita State in the semifinals.

Serra Kanemoto of WSU was first (out of 169 rollers) with a 206.0 average, while Nicole Mottier (So., Madison, Wis., Computer Science) topped the Statesmen in ninth place with a 190.3 clip.

Bailey Palmer (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Biology) just missed joining Mottier in the top 10, taking 12th with an average of 187.2. Amber Ovel (Sr., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management), at 174.5, and Nicole Craft (Jr., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education), at 162.0, also started all six games.

Kayla Gifford (Jr., Camanche, Iowa, Biology) competed in five games with a 177.6 average, while Kaylee Gerken (Sr., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education) knocked down 172 pins in her lone round.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Davenport next Saturday and Sunday to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
