Women Lose 70-59 to AIB
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s basketball squad had another tough ending to a league game as it fell 70-59 to AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Wednesday.
The final six minutes of play on Wednesday night unfortunately took away from what was a hotly-contested game. Tied at 50-50 with 6:23 left in regulation, the Statesmen (7-10, 0-2 MCC) failed to have close out strong. The Eagles (4-13, 1-2 MCC) tallied ten points in a row over the next four minutes to pull away for the win.
In a matchup that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, William Penn was cold from the field, being outshot 39.7%-29.9%. The hosts stayed in it, though, with a 12-2 edge in three-pointers, including six by its leading scorer Brittany May (Sr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology), who had 18 points.
Dani Stahle (Sr., South Weber, Utah, History/Government & Psychology) had an all-around solid outing with 15 points in addition to six assists and three steals.
The trio of Janay Pritchett (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology & Sociology), Katie Golomski (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology), and Jessie Kreuser (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Undecided) added six points apiece in the setback. Kreuser made a difference in other ways as well with team highs in rebounds (9) and blocks (3).
William Penn was outrebounded 44-42, but a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass led to a 12-7 lead in second-chance points. Both sides missed four free throws, but unfortunately AIB (22-for-26) had many more opportunities than the Statesmen (7-for-11). WPU forced 17 turnovers, but committed 20 on its own court, leading to a 21-12 Eagle advantage in points off mistakes.
