William Penn’s Henry Notches Win #200

Coach Henry breathes a sigh of relief after a tough win versus Mount Mercy

Oskaloosa–John Henry began his coaching career just over a decade ago and after suffering through the worst season in program history, few would have put money on him making past a few years in the profession, let alone joining exclusive company as a member of the 200-Win Club.

Well, those who would have placed that bet would have become very rich Wednesday night as the William Penn head man earned his 200th victory in his squad’s 104-70 decision over AIB.

Henry, now in his 11th season (became head coach seven games into the 2001-2002 campaign), owns a current mark of 200-152.

Prior to his appointment, William Penn had not produced a winning record since 1987, a streak of 14-consecutive losing years.

His first team finished 2-30 (0-14 MCC) (he was saddled with a 2-23 mark), but the turnaround was surprisingly quick.

The Statesmen finished 15-18 the next year and then the navy and gold posted seven-straight non-losing seasons (one year at .500, rest were winning).

During that stretch, William Penn won three Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season crowns (2006, 2007, 2008), reached five MCC Tournament Finals (2004-2008), and won two tourney titles to advance to a pair of NAIA Division II National Championships (2007, 2008).

Another MCC Tournament Finals appearance came in 2010.

Henry’s squads have smashed numerous school records, including most wins in a season with 28 in 2007-2008.
