Des Moines–The Statesmen soccer team failed to even its overall record, falling 5-2 to AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Tuesday.

William Penn (5-7, 1-2 MCC) allowed a goal in the tenth minute, but rallied for two goals to take a 2-1 advantage into the break.

Cameron Russell (Fr., Golden, Colo., Industrial Technology) scored his second goal of the season at the 30:32 mark off a pass from Matheus Riberio (Fr., Vitoria, Brazil, Biology). It was Riberio’s second assist of 2012.

Mark Dryden (Jr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology) then put his team ahead in the 35th minute on an unassisted free kick goal, his second this season. Dryden paced the offensive effort with five shots (AIB won that category 22-9).

Unfortunately, AIB owned the second stanza, getting four shots past goalkeeper Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology), who finished with five saves.

Next: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host St. Ambrose in MCC play at 7 p.m.
