William Penn Splits Triangular for Second Time in Three Days
Baldwin City, Kan.–The Statesmen men’s wrestling team replicated its outing from earlier this week as it went 1-1 in a triangular hosted by Baker Thursday.
WPU (5-3, 3-2 Heart) opened the night with a 28-18 non-conference win over Oklahoma Wesleyan. Unfortunately, a sweep was not in the cards as the navy and gold fell 25-12 to #16 Baker in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
Jeffery Myers (Fr., Yelm, Wash., Education) got the Statesmen off to a great start, pinning Zeke Wheeler of Oklahoma Wesleyan in a time of 1:00 at 125 pounds.
The Eagles answered with a pair of wins to put WPU in an 8-6 hole, but 149-pounder Cameron Hargrove (So., Bolingbrook, Ill., Undecided) turned the tide with a pin of Chad Sakamoto in 4:50. That started a run of four wins in a row for the Statesmen.
157-pounder Steven Skewes (So., Duchesne, Utah, Exercise Science), in a time of 6:15 over Andrew Mahoney, and 165-pounder Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science), in a time of 1:28 over Dregen Murray, then pinned their foes for a commanding 24-8 edge.
Makail Stanley (So., Orena, Ill., Biology) capped his team’s scoring with a 15-3 major decision triumph over Jaden Welden at 174 pounds.
The Statesmen came up short in the final three bouts, although Branson Bottorff (Jr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) nearly posted an upset in a 3-2 setback to #20 nationally-ranked Josh Cortez at 197 pounds.
William Penn’s meet against Baker was a toss-up that could have gone either way with seven of the nine contested matches being determined by just regular decisions.
Myers put the visitors on the board with six quick points via forfeit at 125 pounds. 133-pounder Sabri Sino (Fr., Franklin, Wis., Sports Management) then tacked on three more points with a 4-0 shutout decision over Ben Stubblefield.
The navy and gold were denied in the next three matches, however, but lost by just seven combined points. Hargrove, who is 13th in the NAIA, fell 6-4 to #15 Dallas Koelzer, while Preston Wiest could not keep up with #16 Joey Hancock in a 5-3 setback at 165 pounds.
Stanley, who is #22 nationally, got the squad back on track with a 3-1 overtime decision against #16 Joey Ewalt to draw even with the Wildcats at 12-12.
The hosts finished strong, though, with three wins in a row to complete their sweep on Thursday. (also beat OKWU 33-12).
