Oskaloosa–The Statesmen soccer squad had a disappointing beginning to its 2012 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Concordia (Neb.) Friday night.

William Penn (0-1) fell behind early with a goal in the first 76 seconds and could never recover. The Bulldogs (1-0) only held a 12-5 edge in shots, but were efficient with their opportunities, including getting one more first-half goal at 17:38.

Concordia then tacked on its final score at 53:17 on an own goal as Joshua Jacobs (So., Luton, England, Potteridge HS) unfortunately misdirected a header into the Statesmen net. Jacobs was his team’s top offensive threat with two shots.

The contest was quite physical with seven yellow cards being issued by the officials, including three to the home team.

Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, St. Francis HS) posted five saves in the setback.

Next: William Penn stays at home Sunday to host Ottawa (Kan.) in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
