William Penn Shut Out by GVU
Des Moines–The Statesmen women’s soccer team failed to knock off rival Grand View in a 2-0 loss in Heart of America Athletic Conference competition Tuesday.
In a game that was moved to a new location due to weather, William Penn (4-3, 1-1 Heart) was outshot 10-2, including 4-1 in the first 45 minutes. Fortunately, the visitors were able to keep the Vikings (4-3-1, 2-0 Heart) off the board.
GVU finally broke through in the 62nd minute, however, and then added its second score in the 86th minute. AnnaMarie Urps (Fr., Wilton, Calif., Physical Education) and Lauren Abbas (Sr., Adel, Iowa, Communications) posted the visiting team’s offense with one shot each, while Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) stopped two attempts in goal.
“I am disappointed for the team because we played with a lot of heart, effort, and tenacity and left everything on the field,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “Grand View is a good team and I am delighted we did not sit back; instead we had a real good go at them and for periods of the game we had them under a lot of pressure.”
“We have to put it behind us now as we have some tough games ahead,” McGowan added. “If we can bring the same intensity to the next few games, I think we will be a tough team to beat and may be able to make things very interesting in the Heart.”
