William Penn Opens Up Fall at Mount Mercy Invite

Marion–The Statesmen golf team began the fall season with a disappointing showing at the Mount Mercy Cropper Classic Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn finished 16th out of 19 teams with a final tally of 652 (329-323) at the par-72 Hunters Ridge Golf Course.

Mount Mercy dominated its own tournament with a 578 (295-283), 25 strokes ahead of Illinois Wesleyan. The Mustangs’ Ryan Schlueter completed the sweep as he won medalist honors with a three-under 141 (70-71).

Adriaan de Villiers (Sr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) paced the Statesmen with a 150 (76-74) to tie for 15th out of 113 players.

Byron Lindeque (So., Boksburg, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) was next in a tie for 81st at 164 (85-79), while Ben Roberts (Fr., Albia, Eddyville-Blakesburg HS) tied for 94th at 169 (85-84).

Seb Stobart (Sr., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College) and Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) tied for 100th as both shot 84-86 for a total of 170.

Next: William Penn travels to Moravia on September 20-21 to host the Iowa Intercollegiate at The Preserve GC.
