William Penn Opens 2017 with Night Race

Sioux Falls, S.D.–The Statesmen cross country teams went under the lights Friday to open their seasons as they competed at the Augustana Twilight.

Guadalupe Gonzalez (Sr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) topped all of the navy and gold harriers as she was 105th out of 310 runners in the 5K women’s race. She finished in a time of 19:57.18, finishing just five seconds away from her personal best.

Michelle Reyes (Fr., Brownsville, Texas, Biology) was next in her collegiate debut, placing 282nd in a time of 23:53.50, while Bree’Anna Lee (So., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) ended up in 296th position in 26:39.26.

Rachel Surbaugh (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Biology), in 308th at 30:43.15, and Lauren Lehman (Jr., Norwalk, Iowa, Undecided), 310th in 31:00.53, also hit the course Friday.

Emily Martin of Creighton topped the women’s field in 17:21.68.

Mason Phillips of Sioux Falls won the men’s four-mile race in a time of 19:15.09; a total of 280 men were in action.

Charles Dominics (Fr., Maspeth, N.Y., Sports Management) headlined the Statesmen effort by placing 221st in a time of 23:37.25.

Joseph Diaz (Fr., Laredo, Texas, Wellness and Recreation) was 20 spots behind Dominics in the standings in a time of 23:57.89 for 233rd place.

Cameron Shade (So., Riverdale, Ga., Sociology) came in third for WPU in 248th at 24:39.85, while
Shane Crozier (Fr., South Holland, Ill., Sports Management) (270th, 26:14.85) and Julian Davis (Fr., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering) (273rd, 26:53.19) participated Friday as well.

No team scores were reported at the time of print.

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Des Moines on September 15 to compete in the Grand View Invitational.
