William Penn Keeps Home Court Dreams Alive with Sweep of AIB

Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen volleyball team made quick work of AIB in a Midwest Collegiate Conference sweep Tuesday.

William Penn (24-12, 2-3 MCC) won by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-21. The team hit .310 and limited the Eagles to -.012 as it is still in the running to host an MCC Tournament game next Saturday.

The home squad trailed 3-2 early in the opening game and remained in a tight battle with a 7-6 lead before reeling off 18 of the final 22 points for the 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Statesmen were never challenged in the second game, but almost emptied the bench too much in the third game, trailing 16-15 late. The Eagles (1-28, 0-6 MCC) could not hold onto the advantage as William Penn scored seven in a row to complete the sweep.

Katie Rielly (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Digital Communications) was the only person in double figures with ten kills, while Jeanette Cunningham (Jr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) added nine winners.

With Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) possibly lost for the rest of the year due to an injury suffered last weekend, Leyra Jusino (Fr., Bayamon, P.R., Biology) stepped into the starting setter role Tuesday night and performed well.

Jusino finished with team highs in assists (17), aces (5), and digs (7), while Kylie Giger (Fr., Elkhart, Ind., Undecided) was a part of four blocks (all assists).

“I am pleased with our result tonight,” Head Coach Jeremy Wise said. “With our starting setter out with an injury, our goal was to try out a few lineups and different offensive looks using our two backup setters. They both did a great job running our offense tonight.”

“We also wanted to get lots of playing time for our bench and were able to accomplish that, getting almost our entire roster into the match for some action,” Wise added. “We would like to build on tonight’s win for another home match tomorrow as we will be celebrating Parents and Senior Night to wrap up our home schedule.”
