William Penn Falls to Iowa Wesleyan 69-54
Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen hoopsters were unsuccessful in their attempt to avenge one of the toughest losses of the year in a 69-54 Midwest Collegiate Conference loss to Iowa Wesleyan Saturday.
William Penn (9-16, 7-7 MCC) lost, but fortunately so did Viterbo. Therefore the Lady Statesmen are still listed as the #4 seed in the league standings and have the inside path to hosting a first-round tournament game.
The home team was seeking to give the Tigers (14-9, 10-4 MCC) a taste of their own medicine after a 57-27 IWC win in January, but Saturday also belonged to the squad in black and purple.
The Lady Statesmen led early, but an Ashley Kruse layup put the visitors up for good at 13-12. Iowa Wesleyan led by as much as 18 points before settling on 35-25 halftime edge.
The second half also went to the Tigers, who outshot the navy and gold 40.0%-33.8% and made all 15 of their free throws (WPU was 6-of-8 at the line).
The lone bright spot for William Penn came on the glass with a convincing 44-34 rebounding margin, good for an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.
Katie Golomski (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Pius Xi HS) hit a trio of three-pointers en route to a team-high 11 points. The freshman also assisted on five scores and stole two passes.
Orielle Thomas (So., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) added seven points in addition to a game-best 13 rebounds.
Sarah Martin (Jr., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS), Michaela Beck (Jr., Onawa, West Monona HS), and Alisha Moritz (Sr., Emily, Minn., Minnesota-Crookston) each contributed six points. Moritz was the team’s lone player celebrating Senior Day.
William Penn turned the ball over 21 times (15 TOs for IWC), resulting in a huge 18-4 Tiger advantage in points off turnovers.
Next: The Lady Statesmen travel to Des Moines Wednesday to face #9 Grand View in MCC play at 5:30 p.m.
