Statesmen to #12 in Latest Gridiron Poll
Oskaloosa–Another week and another win for the Penn football team has launched the program to even higher heights as the NAIA’s fifth national poll was released Monday.
The Statesmen (6-0, 3-0 MWL), who have earned 239 points (38 more than last week), continue to improve upon their best ranking since joining the NAIA in 2001. Penn held off rival Iowa Wesleyan in a 56-41 shootout last Saturday.
For the 21st week in a row, Sioux Falls (S.D.) (6-0) heads the ranking with 416 points and 16 of the 18 first-place votes. The rest of the top seven remains unchanged from last week with Carroll (Mont.), Saint Xavier (Ill.), Morningside, and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) rounding out the first five. Carroll and Saint Xavier both have one first-place vote each.
Penn, now the only undefeated team in the Midwest League, is the head of the class with McKendree dropping to #19. The Statesmen are also the second-highest team from the state of Iowa behind #4 Morningside.
Penn hosts St. Ambrose in MWL action Saturday at 1 p.m.

Libero of the Week Laurel Goes to Hadden
Oskaloosa–Caitlin Hadden (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) averaged nearly eight digs a set last week and her efforts earned her Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball Libero of the Week honors, announced by the league office Monday.
Hadden helped Penn (17-11, 3-2 MCC) to a pair of wins at the Hannibal-LaGrange Tournament over the weekend.
The senior, who is now a six-time winner of the award, recorded 129 digs (7.59 per set) last week. She also posted five aces, one assist, and committed just three reception errors in 155 attempts (.981 pct.). Hadden tallied a week-best 31 digs against Hannibal-LaGrange Friday.
For the year, Hadden has 637 digs (6.01 per set) with one kill, 16 assists, and a team-high 36 aces.
It is the team’s second honor of the 2010 campaign.
Eyer Picks Up League POW Honor
Oskaloosa–Tim Eyer (Sr., Palos Heights, Ill., Shepard HS) had a major hand in getting his team back on the winning track last week and for his efforts he was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.
Eyer helped Penn (5-6-1, 2-4 MCC) stop a four-game conference slide as the Statesmen defeated Iowa Wesleyan 4-3 Tuesday and Clarke 4-1 Saturday.
The senior, who also received the league award back on September 15, 2008, opened his week by scoring one goal against the Tigers and then concluded it with a two-goal, one-assist performance versus the Crusaders.
For the year, Eyer now has four goals and one assist for nine total points. His goal and point tallies rank second on the Statesmen squad.
It is the team’s first honor of the 2010 campaign.
