Taylor Collects Hitter Award

Oskaloosa–Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) was a human wrecking ball last week en route to being named Midwest Collegiate Conference Volleyball Hitter of the Week announced by the league Monday.

Taylor posted 63 kills (3.5 per game) as William Penn (9-9, 1-1 MCC) finished last week with a 2-3 record.

The junior owned a .434 attack clip and had a week-high 16 kills against Ashford Saturday.  She hit over .300 in each of the squad’s five matches.

A strong overall player, Taylor also had five service aces, 62 digs, and three blocks (two solos, one assist).

For the year, she leads the Lady Statesmen with 191 kills (3.67 per game) and a .416 attack percentage.  Taylor has also recorded 18 aces, 172 digs, and 22 blocks (four solos, 18 assists).

The award is the first for the volleyball program in 2011.

Parsons’ Four TDs Results in League Honor

Oskaloosa–If Taylor Parsons (So., The Woodlands, Texas, College Park HS) was still battling through an injury last weekend, it was near impossible to tell as his performance netted him Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week laurels announced by the league Monday.

Parsons led William Penn (4-0, 2-0 MWL) to a 68-10 throttling of Waldorf last Saturday.

The sophomore accomplished plenty both on the ground and in the air.  He ran the ball just eight times, but collected 88 yards and two scores.  In the passing game, Parsons completed five-of-nine passes for 89 yards and two more touchdowns.

William Penn, winners of seven in a row, finished the contest with 565 total yards, including 470 rushing.

For the season, Parsons has rushed 41 times for 317 yards (7.7 avg.) and seven touchdowns.  He has also notched 241 yards and four scores on 13-of-30 passing.

The award is the fifth for the football program this fall (two offensive, two defensive, one special teams).

South Africans Top Statesmen at Grand View Classic

Ankeny–Adriaan de Villiers (Jr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) and Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) carded a pair of identical rounds to guide the William Penn men’s golf program at the Grand View Viking Classic Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn finished seventh out of ten teams with a final tally of 613 (294-319) at the par-71 Otter Creek Golf Course.  Host Grand View blitzed the field with a 565 (278-287).

Josh Manske of Grand View defeated teammate Yousaf Khan in a playoff to earn medalist honors at two-under 140 (68-72).

de Villiers and Goldsmith each shot a one-under 70 on the opening day, but fell off the pace and ended the event with 79s for a final mark of 149 to tie for 18th (out of 61 golfers).

Brian Lawson (Sr., Omaha, Neb., Iowa Western CC) was consistent from the first to the second day to post a 157 (80-77) and tie for 44th, while Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) unfortunately went the wrong direction Tuesday.  The senior shot a 164 (74-90) to place 54th.

Geoff Dammann (Jr., Wyoming, Midland HS) rounded out the varsity scoring at 171 (87-84) to finish 60th.

Next: William Penn travels to Panora on September 30-October 1 for the AIB Invitational at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Aggressive Dutch Drop Statesmen 4-1

Oskaloosa–A new competition surface did not help the scoring woes of the William Penn men’s soccer team as it fell 4-1 to Central in non-conference action Tuesday.

The Statesmen (1-5-1), who were outshot 24-13 by Central (5-3), played on the turf of the Lacey Complex Stadium for the first time, but unfortunately similar results to their grass field were posted.

The visitors pushed the ball forward all night and were so aggressive that they were called for 12 offsides.  They finally broke the scoreless tie in the 18th minute and then added two more goals before the half in the 36th and 45 minutes.

William Penn, guided by four shots from Jordan Hoffman (So., Hyde Park, Utah, Skyview HS) cancelled the shutout in the 84th minute on a perfectly placed corner kick by Mark Dryden (So., Arbroath, Scotland, Arbroath HS) that was finished off by Jason Batek (Fr., Chillicothe, Ill., Illinois Valley Central HS).

The goal is Batek’s first in his collegiate career, while Dryden now has a team-best two assists in 2011.

Central answered the score with a final one of its own with just 2:17 left on the clock.

Sam Gurski (So., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) recorded six saves in the start, while Mason Bandy (Fr., Calgary, Alberta, St. Francis HS) matched him with six stops in his collegiate debut.

Next: The Statesmen remain at home next Saturday to host Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at 7 p.m.
