Virginia “Suzy” Wright, 81, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born July 16, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Reginald C. “R.C.” and Georgena McDonough Wright.
Suzy graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1962. She earned degrees from William Penn College in psychology and computers in 1992.
She worked for her father part-time for several years. She was a faithful member of the Gateway Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years, she cherished the title of “Baby Rocker” in the nursery for over 40 years.
She enjoyed sewing, reading and cooking and loved music. She will be remembered for her strong will and determination. Though, her condition left her with some challenges physically, she always found a way or found someone to help her overcome those challenges and remain independent throughout her life.
Her family includes her two daughters, Jennifer (Troy) Sheely of Oskaloosa, Penny (Bill Taylor) Thiem of Greenfield, Missouri; five grandchildren: Zachary Wright, Sarah Hayes, Alexis (Nick) Pettyjohn, Jackson Sheely and adopted grandson Jamison Ireland; four great grandchildren: Krystal Wright, Emmit Mabary, Adalyn Pettyjohn, and Brodi Pettyjohn; a sister-in-law, Peggy Wright of rural New Sharon; a cousin, Beth (Rev. Steve) Bagby of Oskaloosa; and many nieces, nephews, and friends and other adopted children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Donnie Jean “Jim” Wright and Rex “PeeWee” Wright; two sisters, Gloria Wright, and Elaine Savage; and two sons in law, Jairus Hayes and Daniel Thiem Sr.
Visitation will begin Tuesday, November 21, 2023, after 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives. As was Sue’s wish her body will be cremated following the visitation and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
