Oskaloosa–Two members of the William Penn wrestling team were the best among their peers at the Central Invitational Saturday.

In an event in which no team scores were kept, the Statesmen likely would have placed high as 133-pounder Joao Vicente (Fr., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) and 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (So., Newton, Iowa, Biology) were both dominant with identical 3-0 records.

Vicente won his first match by fall, his next by decision, and then finished his day with a 24-5 technical fall over Cody Weitzel of Augustana (Ill.) in the finals. The title is his second of the campaign.

Soderblom was equally impressive with back-to-back falls to reach the championship. He then dropped Ryan Williamson of St. Olaf (Minn.) 7-3 for his first crown of the year (second of his career).

Jay Fresh (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology) joined his ‘golden’ teammates with three wins (3-2 overall) at 141 pounds. The freshman won once by technical fall.

A half-dozen Statesmen grapplers were two-time winners Saturday, highlighted by two falls by both 149-pounder Lane Colwell (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) and 174-pounder Joe Sumner (Jr., Delaware, Ohio, Physical Education).

Elson Civilma (So., Deerfield Beach, Fla., Communications) earned a victory by both fall and major decision at 184 pounds, while 149-pounder Charlton Benjamin (So., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) defeated two opponents by major decision.

Nick Wise (Phoenix, Ariz., Biology) and Nathan Veverka (Jr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) were both 2-2 with a pin at 174 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.

141-pounder Blake Rogers (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Sociology) and 149-pounder Marshawn Lacy (So., Chicago Heights, Ill., Computer Science) each had their hands raised courtesy of a fall, while 157-pounder Ishmael Rempson (So., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) earned a major-decision victory. Clint Doty (Fr., Warren, Mich., Biology) won one time as well.

Next: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. next Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational.
