Oskaloosa, IA, February 15, 2012- On the night of Tuesday, February 14, two 9 week old Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix puppies were stolen from the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter. The two puppies, “Bronson” and “Gordon” were two of a litter of four that were surrendered to the animal shelter the previous week. When shelter staff arrived at the shelter at 8:00am the morning of February 15, they had noticed that only two of the puppies were in their kennel. All four puppies were accounted for when the shelter closed for the day on Tuesday. Shelter staff believes the intruders were able to gain access to the building by going through an exterior window that may have not been properly locked. “There was no evidence of forced entry, but one of the kennel staff noticed that a window in the cat room leading to our outdoor cat enclosure had not been properly latched. In addition, there is evidence that the latch on the door to the outdoor cat enclosure had been tampered with” says Executive Director, Lindsey Sime. “It is absolutely appalling to us that somebody would not only steal from an animal shelter, but also go as far as breaking and entering in attempt to do so.”

The two puppies weigh in at about 3lbs each and are both male. “Bronson,” is tan and white in color, while “Gordon” is black, white, and tan in color. Anybody who believes they have information that might lead to the safe return of the puppies is encouraged to contact the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter by phone at (641) 673-3991 or by email at smas@mahaska.org.
