Trio Ranked for WPU
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s wrestling team has good representation on the league and national lists as the NAIA released its first poll Thursday.
William Penn is ranked 23rd with 24 points and has three grapplers rated at their respective weights.
Salima Omari (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) is ninth at 155 pounds, while Mami Selemani (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) is 14th at 123 pounds. Toyia Griffin (So., Nashua, Iowa, Nursing) is also ranked, sitting at #19 at 170 pounds.
Southern Oregon is the NAIA’s new #1 with 196 points, while previous #1 Campbellsville (Ky.) is second with 183 points. Grand View (181), Menlo (Calif.) (151) and Life (Ga.) (149) round out the top five.
The Statesmen are seventh in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with 83.5 points, while Grand View tops the league with 226 points.
Omari is WPU’s top wrestler in the conference as 155-pound’s #2, while Selemani and Griffin are both fourth in their weight classes.
Payge Fuller (Fr., Plattsburg, Mo.) gives the navy and gold a second individual at 170 as she is fifth.
116-pounder Grecia Martinez (Fr., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Technology) is seventh at 116 pounds, while 123-pounder Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) is also seventh.
191-pounder Samantha Ruano (Jr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) is eighth, and Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) joins Martinez in the 116 rankings in ninth place.
William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. Friday and Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational.
