Three in Top 20 at Glenn Carlson Tournament

Las Vegas, Nev.–The William Penn women’s bowling team narrowly missed out on bracket play at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

WPU was ninth out of 22 teams with 8,051 pins in nine regular games. Wichita State (Kan.) led qualifying with 9,152 pins and capped off the performance by defeating #3 seed Webber International (Fla.) 3-2 in the finals of bracket competition.

The Statesmen finished just seven pins shy of earning a top-eight bracket spot.

Kristie Lopez of WSU held off teammate Holly Johansen by one pin to win the tournament crown with 1,914 pins (212.7 avg.).

Briell Newberry (Jr., Holland, Mich., Elementary Education) paced a trio of Statesmen bowlers in the top 20 as she placed 16th with a 187.2 average. Stephanie Adams (Sr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) was next with a 186.6 clip to finish 18th, and Bailey Palmer (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) was 20th with an average of 186.1.

Amber Ovel (So., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management) averaged 172.5 pins in eight games, while MacKenzie Boyd (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Psychology and Human Services) posted a 164.7 mark in seven games.

Nicole Craft (Fr., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education), at 151.0 (two games), and Kayla Gifford (Fr., Camanche, Iowa, Biology), with a 177 in her lone game, also battled for the varsity.

William Penn brought the only women’s JV team and therefore was grouped in with the men’s division. The navy and gold showed well against the men, taking fourth out of six squads with 6,867 pins.

Kaylee Gerken (So., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education) topped the crew with a 170.0 average in all nine games; Cybil Lennie (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Human Services) (158.0), Melinda Garrett (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, General Accounting) (156.4), and Maddison Saner (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa) (143.4) also started every round.

Lindsey Howard (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Psychology and Sociology) knocked down an average of 134.8 pins in five games, while Rachel Wesely (Fr., Dallas City, Ill., Sociology) owned a 135.5 clip in four starts.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Las Vegas Wednesday and Thursday to compete in the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout.
