Sy Cavan, the son of Sor Cavan and Mouane Lothi, was born March 4, 1921, in North Vietnam, Son La, and served as a Marine in the French military. In 1954, he was united in marriage to Noi Quang in Laos, and Noi died December 10, 2008. Early in life they moved to Laos to farm. In 1984, he retired and moved to the United States of America. He then worked from his home making grapevine decorations for a company in Lamoni. In 1993, he moved in with his son Nick in Oskaloosa. He was a member of the Sotaf Society. Sy enjoyed doing crafts and weaving bamboo. On Thursday, January 10, 2013, Sy died at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa, at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 6 days.

He is survived by his three sons, Anh (& Noi) Cavan of North Vietnam, Hao (& Feuang) Cavan of Toulouse, France, Nick (& Seuam) Cavan of Oskaloosa; four daughters, House Lothi of North Vietnam, Chuch Cathi of Oskaloosa, Deng (& Mitchell) Forester of Toulouse, France, and Dia (& John) Reese of Des Moines; 27 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Noi, Sy was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Feng Cavan, Song Cavan and Sam Cavan.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Edward Kavan and Reverend Rodney DeRonde officiating. As was Sy’s wish, his body will be cremated following the funeral ceremony. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the Old White Cemetery, Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
