Supervisors Set Local Option Sales Tax Imposition Public Hearing

Oskaloosa, Iowa – At their regular meeting of the Mahaska County Supervisors, the supervisors voted unanimously to set January 3, 2017 at 9 a.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on the imposition of the local option sales tax. On the November 8 general election ballot, rural residents overwhelmingly approved the renewal of the local option sales tax, which called for 80% of rural monies to go towards road improvements and 20% going towards the proposed new conservation center at Caldwell Park. Other sections of Mahaska County had previously approved the local option sales tax renewal in a May special election, with a large part of those monies going towards a proposed early childhood and recreational center.

In other action on Monday, the board:

  • Received reports from Deann DeGroot, MCARD Director, and Dave Sedivec, Conservation Director.
  • Unanimously approved the county safety manuals.
  • Unanimously approved the adoption of the hazard mitigation plan. It will now be sent to the state for their review, and then after reviewed again by local officials, will be sent to FEMA for their review. After FEMA has reviewed the plan, it will be sent back to the local level for other jurisdictions in the plan to review and adopt.
  • Unanimously approved the appointment of Elizabeth Christopher and Joe S. Crookham to the Pioneer Cemetery Commission. It was noted during discussion that Joe S. Crookham is not the president of Musco Corporation.
  • Discussed medical/dental/vision insurance rates for fiscal year 2017-2018.

The next regular meeting of the Mahaska County Supervisors will be on January 3 at 9 a.m. in the Supervisors chambers. At that meeting, Supervisor-Elect Mark Groenedyk and Sheriff-Elect Russ Van Renterghem will be sworn into office. Auditor Sue Brown, who was re-elected in November, will also be sworn in to her second term.
