Supervisors Canvass Municipal Election Vote
Oskaloosa, Iowa- The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors canvased the results of Tuesday’s election officially certifying the winners. The board convened at 2:00 PM to hand-count the ballots from all communities in Mahaska County. Due to the amount of write in candidates, the task was lengthened.
Supervisors had to examine each write in candidate to verify names, as well as to make sure ballots were marked properly. Several ballots had to be discarded because voters had placed a “x” or a check mark in the oval. Auditor Kay Swanson stated during the canvass that the oval was to be filled in completely otherwise the ballot could not be counted.
In addition, some ballots could not be counted because a particular name was wrote in for more than one office. An example of this was in Oskaloosa where one person had voted for Jimmy Carter for more than one office. This ballot had to be disqualified.
It was also officially decided that there would have to be run off elections. Since several candidates did not achieve the required number of votes to be election, run-off elections will be held in Beacon and University Park on December 6th. Beacon will elect two council members and University Park will elect one council member.
