Statesmen Roll to First Dual Win of Season
Lamoni–The William Penn wrestling team had little trouble picking up its first dual meet victory of the year, defeating first-year program Graceland 49-3 Tuesday.
The Statesmen (1-1) won five of six contested matches and received four additional forfeit victories.
Andrew Gorman (Fr., Madison Heights, Mich., Business Management) opened the evening with a forfeit at 125 pounds. Scottie Bonds (Fr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) then got the actual grappling underway at 133 pounds with a pin of Garrett Owens in a time of 2:34.
141-pounder Lane Colwell (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) then stuck Dakota Hill in 3:52 and Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) did the same to Demond Jennings in 2:09 at 149 pounds.
157-pounder Charlton Benjamin (Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) made it 27-0 in favor of the visitors with his 6-2 victory against Dakota Britt.
The night was nearly perfect, but unfortunately Jay Fresh (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology) lost a tough 8-7 decision to Meredith Meador at 165 pounds.
Ishmael Rempson (Jr., Olympia Heights, Ill., Industrial Technology) concluded the action at 174 pounds with a 12-4 major decision over Bryson Kinyon. 184-pounder Joe Sumner (Sr., Delaware, Ohio, Physical Education), 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Jr., Newton, Iowa, Biology), and heavyweight Nathan Veverka (Sr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) also had their hands raised by forfeit to end the evening.
Next: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo., Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational. Action starts at 9 a.m.
