Statesmen Roll Past William Woods in an 18-7 Triumph

Fulton, Mo.–The No. 10-ranked Statesmen men’s lacrosse team dominated William Woods with an 18-7 victory in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.

William Penn (5-3, 4-0 Heart) held a slim 47-44 advantage in shots over the Owls (1-6, 1-3 Heart), but their offense was far from subtle in the final two quarters, pulling away in impressive fashion.

The game began with William Penn trailing after the first quarter, as Nate Blasingame (Sr., Portland, Ore., Business Management) opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the contest. The Statesmen struggled to get things going offensively, though, allowing the Owls to tally one goal. Blasingame added another goal, while Garrett Katrana (Fr., Parker, Colo., Industrial Technology) found the back of the goal at 3:25 before the Owls added one goal to enter halftime with a 3-2 Statesmen lead. William Penn led 3-2 at the break.

In the second quarter, the Statesmen’s offense continued to sputter early on, adding only two goals. Breck Putzier (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Exercise Science) assisted Daniel McQuade (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Political Science) for a goal at 11:52, but the Owls answered with a quick goal of their own. Blasingame’s third goal of the game, assisted by Max Standage (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Business Management), put William Penn ahead 5-3 heading into halftime.

After halftime, William Penn found their rhythm. Despite the Owls scoring first in the third quarter, Kenny Bohney (Jr., Moorhead, Minn., Exercise Science) responded quickly. The Statesmen then went on a dominant 5-0 run to end the period, starting with Katrana before Max Taylor (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Business Management) and Putzier, who received an assist from Katrana, both scored within 20 seconds of each other. Bohney and Putzier added two more to close the third quarter with a commanding 11-4 lead.

The fourth quarter saw William Penn continue their offensive explosion. Blasingame, Putzier, and Bohney each scored in the opening minute, and McQuade found the back of the net with an assist from Bohney at 12:59. Putzier added another unassisted goal to cap a 5-0 run, putting the Statesmen ahead 16-4. William Woods fought back with two consecutive goals, but Seth Read (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz., Psychology) and Taylor responded for William Penn, sealing the win. The Owls added one more goal in the final moments, but it wasn’t enough.

Blasingame led the Statesmen with four goals on eight shots, adding one assist. Putzier matched his output with four goals and one assist, tallying seven shots. Bohney also contributed three goals and one assist, finishing with seven attempts.

Defensively, William Penn dominated in ground balls, holding a 37-29 advantage. Blasingame led the charge with 11 ground balls, while Putzier and Bohney added seven and five, respectively. The Statesmen were also nearly flawless at the faceoff X, winning 22 of 29 faceoffs. Blasingame was perfect, going 9-for-9, while Kameron Brown (So., Woodinville, Wash., Business Management) went 8-for-12, and Bryce Campbell (Jr., Boise, Idaho) won 5 of 8. However, the Statesmen committed 18 turnovers, compared to just 11 for William Woods.

“We made that game tougher than it needed to be early, but credit to William Woods, they gave us their best shot,” said Head Coach Luke Christiansen. “Overall, a good team victory, and we learned some good lessons about how we need to play to reach our potential.”

Next Up: William Penn returns home to Statesmen Community Stadium to face Missouri Valley Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in another Heart of America competition.
