Statesmen Open Season with Finish in Top Half

Wauwatosa, Wis.–The William Penn men’s bowling team came up short in its defense of the Midwest Collegiate Tournament title as it began the 2012-2013 campaign there Saturday and Sunday.

The navy and gold, who were first out of 38 teams last year, placed 21st out of 42 teams last weekend with a nine-game tally of 10,859 pins. Robert Morris (Ill.) dominated the field with 12,330 pins, 482 ahead of runner-up Webber International (Fla.).

Kyle King of Robert Morris won the individual crown with a 231.4 average (2,083 pins), 15 pins more than teammate Marshall Kent.

Cameron Foster (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management) topped William Penn by placing 29th out of 306 participants with a 205.4 average. Piet Schaeffer (Jr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics) and Brandon Barboza (So., Brick, N.J., Sociology) also tossed all nine games with Schaeffer owning a 200.0 average and Barboza having a 190.1 clip.

Conan Mackey (So., Bray, Ireland, Public Accounting), with a 180.4 mark, and Drew Balta (Jr., Walford, Iowa, Education), with a 174.6 average, each started seven games, while Jacques Kaune (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) averaged 191.8 pins over four games.

Next: William Penn is off one weekend before returning to action October 20-21 at the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic in Peoria, Ill.
