Statesmen Dominate Waldorf Invite
Ventura–The William Penn shotgun sports team suffered no ill effects of being out of action for nearly a month as it won the Waldorf Invitational last Saturday.
WPU was first out of three teams by hitting 679 targets out of a 750 total for a 90.5% rate. It was the squad’s first competition since taking second at SCTP Nationals in October.
The day began with the navy and gold going nearly perfect in Trap with a score of 246-for-250. Bryon Baca (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) in fact was without a blemish at 50-for-50, while the quintet of Mathew Brindley (Fr., Earlham, Iowa, Industrial Technology), Noah Seelye (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering), Hunter Lucas (Jr., Washington, Iowa), Raylee Bishop (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa, Engineering Technology), and KayLynn Sieber (Fr., Marshall, Minn., Biology) ended up one off the pace at 49-for-50.
Bishop took top female honors by winning a shoot-off against Sieber.
The Statesmen then claimed the American Handicap crown at 205-for-250. Baca and Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Business Management) shared top honors at 42-for-50 with Baca winning the shoot-off between the pair.
Sieber then followed at 41-for-50, while Bishop, Brindley, Dryden DeKoning (Fr., Newton, Iowa, Business Management), Lane Arrowood (Fr., Newton, Iowa, Biology), Kade Dunkin (Fr., Hamilton, Iowa), and Caytlin Pendleton (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, Communications) all tallied 40-for-50 performances.
The final event was Doubles Trap and William Penn once again came out on top at 228-for-250. Seelye grabbed the gold at 47-for-50 with Dominick Ver Meer (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) in the silver spot at 46-for-50.
DeKoning, Brindley, and Arrowood all knotted together at 45-for-50, while Bishop guided all females at 44-for-50.
“It is a good feeling going into the end of a competition and all the members in a shoot-off are from your team,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “The balance of this team is becoming quite amazing.”
