Spill Creates Hazard And Closes Down Portions Of A Ave

Oskaloosa Street Department and Oskaloosa Fire Department finish cleanup of the mysterious liquid that appeared on Oskaloosa streets Thursday
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Reports started coming in, as firefighters were out helping with the ‘Day of Caring” project by painting house numbers on curbs. A mysterious liquid was being spread over the streets of Oskaloosa.
The spill appeared to have started at the intersection of Highway 92 (A Ave) and Hillcrest, but was plainly visible looking down the road to the West. The substance was easy to spot on the road and it was being carried along on the tires of passing motorists as they traveled, giving clues to where the traffic turned along the way. The Oskaloosa Fire Department and Oskaloosa Police closed down one lane of traffic for approximately an hour and a half while the mess was cleaned up from Hillcrest to 11th. The slick, even though worse at the mentioned area, could be seen further down the street due to the fact that many people had driven through it before the authorities had been notified.
Oskaloosa Fire Chief Mark Neff stated, “We don’t know what the product was. It obviously come out of a tanker truck or applicator because it was pretty well one lane wide”.
Neff said that the DOT came out and applied sand to the spill as it was slick and posed a danger to motorists.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be analyzing samples to determine what the substance was.
The Oskaloosa Street Department, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Oskaloosa Police Department all assisted the Oskaloosa Fire Department.
