Oskaloosa, Iowa- It was nearly too hot for anyone to look like royalty, but Allie Ferguson found a way and was named Queen at the Southern Iowa Fair. Ryan Smithart was named King.

Harold and Darlene Slagter were named the Senior King and Queen 2011.

The Mangini Brothers were drawing a good crowd to their cool sounds next to the grandstands. Meanwhile the dog show was taking place in the pavilion, which had been delayed by the extreme heat.

Once again a reminder, if you’re planning on coming to the fair, keep in mind that we are still under an Excessive Heat Warning. Extreme heat can cause problems for those with health issues. Prolonged exposure makes even the most minor illness get worse.

Mahaska County Emergency Manager Jamey Robinson said for those planning on attending the fair “I would recommend drinking plenty of water before coming, bringing plenty of water with you, knowing your limitations, and to seek medical attention if you feel like you’re suffering from the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion.”

The Mangini Brothers played their smooth sound just off the grandstand area on Monday night.

The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Auxiliary trailer is equipped as a first aid and cooling station, courtesy of Mahaska County Emergency Management. The trailer is located just West of the Fairgrounds office.
