Shirley Lemon, 79, of Altoona and formerly of Eddyville and Fremont, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. She was born Wednesday, November 18, 1936, in Schuyler County, Missouri, the daughter of Ramon and Winnifred Elizabeth Cooksey Rowe.
Shirley graduated from Lancaster High School at the age of 16. On March 31, 1965, Shirley was united in marriage to (Paul) Keith Lemon at Glenwood, Missouri. Keith died in 1999.
Shirley worked as a manager and area coordinator for Iowa Workforce Development for 28 years, she retired in 1998.
Shirley was a past president of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Securiy (IAPES).
Her family includes her daughters: Penny Baker (& Cecil Wright) of Altoona and Sandra Maxwell of Pella; eight grandsons: Christopher (& Rochelle) Baker of Altoona, Cory (& Caroline) Baker of Des Moines, Duncan (& April) Wright of Columbia, South Carolina, Cameron Wright of Grimes, Carter Wright of Altoona, Wayne “Andy” (& Donna Borrelli) Maxwell of Glen Burnie, Maryland, Shawn (& Jennifer) Maxwell of Beacon, and Garret Kremer- Wright of Little Rock, Arkansas; a granddaughter, Jamie (& Brian) Vink of Pella; 11 great grandchildren: Zackary and Samantha Maxwell of Millersville, Maryland, Allyson and Maddox Maxwell of Beacon, Levi, Owen and Daisy Vink of Pella, Anthony and Kaylea Mendoza of Altoona, and Michael and Emma Borrelli of Glen Burnie, Maryland; three sisters-in-law: Connie Rowe of Ottumwa, Florine Rowe of Williamsburg and Belva Rowe of Albia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers: Dean, Gene and Bill Rowe; an infant sister, Sandra Verlee; and a stepdaughter, Marilyn Brown.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 11 A.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in Garrett Cemetery near Delta.
Visitation will begin after 2 P.M., Monday, February 29, 2016, in the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Monday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Des Moines, the Lupus Foundation of America in Des Moines or the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
