Second Weekly League Honor for Newman
Oskaloosa–Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) helped his team to secure yet another title and for his efforts he was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday.
Newman collected the second weekly award of his career by leading the Statesmen (23-1, 14-1 Heart) to wins over Mount Mercy last Wednesday and MidAmerica Nazarene last Saturday. The victories locked up the third-consecutive Heart regular season title for William Penn.
Against Mount Mercy, the senior scored 24 points on 8-for-13 shooting (3-for-7 3-PT). Newman, who was 5-for-5 at the free-throw line, pulled down two rebounds as well. In the win, he also broke the school record for career three-pointers with 251.
Newman then posted another 24-point effort versus MidAmerica Nazarene, going 6-for-14 from the field with a pair of trifectas. His 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe was highlighted by making all four of his tries in the waning seconds of overtime. Newman tallied six assists, three rebounds, one block, and one steal as well.
For the year, Newman is averaging 19.0 points with 75 three-pointers. He is shooting 41.8% from the field, 37.7% from behind the arc, and 75.8% from the line, while also averaging 3.5 rebounds. He also has 44 assists, 15 steals, and six blocks to his credit.
The honor, which is the third in a row for the Statesmen, is the fourth overall for William Penn this year.
