Scouts Honored with “Kernel Award”
Scouts raise more than $1.16 Million for local Scouting Programs
Local Scouts from Pack 71 and Troop 71 chartered by the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, received the Kernel Award from Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America for selling at least $1,250 in popcorn. The Kernel Awards were presented at a special recognition event in Des Moines on December 8, 2018.
The Scouts being honored from Cub Scout Pack 71 were Jace Goodman with $2,668 in sales, and Grady Kennedy with $1,379 in sales. The Scouts being honored from Boy Scout Troop 71 were William Leonard with $1,657 in sales, and Hayden George with $1,300 in sales. Both units combined for total sales of $13,611 with total commissions of $4,614.64 to support Pack and Troop activities.
Since 1983, Mid-Iowa Council has conducted a Popcorn Sale to support 20,000 families throughout its 27 county territory in Central Iowa. More than 600 volunteers coordinate and participate in the annual Popcorn Sale.
In addition to helping fund their Scouting adventures, the process of planning, selling, and delivering the popcorn helps young people gain positive life skills.
The sale raised more than $1.16 million for local Scouting, with proceeds divided between the council and the individual Scout units that participate in the sale. The money is used to send Scouts to summer camps, pay for events like the Pinewood Derby, purchase camping equipment, and fun hundreds of other activities.
Both the Scouts and the units appreciate those helping to support them and their unit activities.
