Richard Withers Martinsburg. Richard “Rocky” Wilford Withers, 71, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa. He was born March 7, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa. As a baby he was adopted by Harry and Minnie Jackson Withers. On October 20, 1956, he was united in marriage to Barbara Bagley. Early on he had various jobs including: school bus driver and custodian at Hedrick School, and delivering for MeJon Fertilizer in Hedrick. In 1969 he started working for Clow Valve in the foundry at Oskaloosa, he remained employed there until 1982, when an automobile accident left him disabled. He enjoyed woodworking, raising cattle, and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting and sharing his faith with people; he especially enjoyed visiting with those in care facilities. He was a devoted husband and family man. He will be remembered as having a good sense of humor and being very quick witted. He was also very giving and always concerned about others’ well being. He was a former Martinsburg City Councilman. His family includes his wife of over 54 years, Barbara Withers of Martinsburg; three daughters and their husbands: Cathy and Keith Moore of Dayton, Ohio, Nancy and Jim Baker of Winterset, Iowa, and Pam and Richie Muntz of Agency; a son and his wife: Terry and Kim Withers of Indianola; ten grandchildren: Joey Richardson, Jessica Beal, Jennifer Johnston, Melissa Baker, Vanessa Muntz, Breanna Muntz, Elijah Muntz, Elizabeth Smith, Tasha Miller, and Teah Miller; his biological mother: Helen Meier of Davenport, two step sisters; and two step brothers. He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents; a brother: Gene Grandstaff; and a grandson: Jeffrey Muntz. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Reverend Richard Schlotter officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 3 p.m. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 5-7p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Richard Withers Memorial Fund.
