Richard Hasley
Los Banos, CA. Richard Eugene “Dick” Hasley 64 of Los Banos, California and Peterson, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Prairie Heritage Center, 4931 Yellow Avenue, Peterson, IA 51047, 712-295-7200. Holland-Coble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dick was born June 17, 1947 in New Sharon, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Arlene Bunnell Hasley and grew up in Searsboro and Brooklyn, most recently residing in Peterson, Iowa and Los Banos, California. He graduated from BGM High School in 1965 and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in business. Richard truly valued the time he spent with friends and family. He enjoyed imparting his wisdom and took every opportunity to share his knowledge. He was a fascinating individual, with that rare charisma that allowed him to strike up interesting conversations and captivate total strangers.
Richard was proud of his military service. In 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed being stationed in England and took the opportunity to absorb the culture by joining a local rugby team. Dick also served our country by completing two tours of duty in Vietnam. Dick married Eunice French in November of 1973. Dick successfully put his military training and formal education to good use in the rapidly expanding telecommunications field. He began his career with GTE in Grinnell and later transferred to United Telephone in Hood River, Oregon. Once again, Dick was afforded the opportunity to travel the world. While in China and Poland his team utilized cutting edge technology to establish massive communication networks. He later worked for Global One and finally took retirement from Sprint in 2001.
Dick was a very social being. He enjoyed being a member of several clubs throughout his life. For example, he generously donated his valuable time to civic organizations such as the American Legion, the Historical Society of Peterson, Toast Masters, the Elk’s and Lion’s clubs. Dick was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Being an avid fisherman, Dick loved the time he spent pulling salmon from the rivers of Washington and Oregon. He had a healthy love of nature and took it upon himself to complete the course work necessary to become a Master Gardener. He considered nature walks, gardening, and hunting all to be excellent ways to spend time. Richard was a good man that loved his family. His love was evident by the way he provided so well for them. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Dick. We will keep you in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice French Hasley of Los Banos, CA; daughters, Lisa Schreoder of Estherville, IA and Angie Spencer of Los Banos, CA; grandchildren, Alex, Kaitlin, and Braden; his mother-in-law Vera French, brothers, John Hasley of Malcom and Mike Hasley of Montezuma; sister, Sharon Kay Winchell of Gardner, KS; his aunts and uncle, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Arlene Hasley, his brother, Charles Hasley, his sister, Charlotte Proctor, and his father-in-law Dale French.
