Question of the Week: Are lawmakers held to a higher standard?

Last week we asked you if you believed that the Westboro Protests were a form of free speech. 79 residents responded with 47 residents (59%) saying No, 28 residents (35%) saying Yes, and 4 residents (6%) saying that they were unsure. The Question of the Week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the view or opinions of Osky News.

This week we focus on a commonly discussed issue. More too often, we hear of political scandals. This year, there has been three separate scandals involving a Republican House member, a Democrat House Member, and a Republican Senator. Two of those involved have resigned and one has been urged to resign. In many cases, when the scandal breaks the person being accused is usually asked to resign by members of their party.

With the most recent political scandal involving Representative Anthony Weiner, the question of where lawmakers are held in society has once again been rekindled. Some believe that lawmakers are held to a higher standard, and some don’t. Those who believe they are say that since they make laws, Congressmen and Senators must be held to a higher standard. They say that since they have been entrusted by the voters to go to work in Washington, they need to be held to a higher standard. Those who say they aren’t held to a higher standard say that just because they are lawmakers doesn’t mean that they must be treated differently. They say that everyone is human and messes up and that law makers should not have to face serious scrutiny when they mess up no matter what the charges may be.

Now it’s your turn to decide. Vote in our online poll. The poll will be open until next Sunday when we will close the poll and release the final voting results. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at info@oskynews.org or visit us on our Facebook Page.
