Prepare To Be Taken Away To Neverland

Oskaloosa, Iowa – After months of practice, set building, more practice and maybe some nervous performers, the show Peter Pan and Wendy is set to hit the stage at George Daily Auditorium this Friday and Saturday evening starting at 7:30 pm. Cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students.
Mrs. Katherine Akers took upon the responsibility of putting together and directing this years performance, her first year in that capacity after spending many years making costumes for the Middle School productions.”This is the first year I’ve taken the reins of directing,” Akers said.
She is joined, as well, by some of the cast, who are experiencing theatre for the first time themselves.
The whimsical type of play is a tradition set in motion by the previous director who had the philosophy that, “Life is too serious, let’s do something fun.” Akers said, “So I’ve kind of taken that to heart and said you know, that’s really true. Let’s do something fun.”
Auditions for the production happened back before Christmas break, and rehearsals starting shortly after returning from the holiday, “and have been rehearsing three nights a week since then.”
As is the case with most activities, such as this, is having to work around the other activities the students participate in. “These are the busy kids, they’re in everything. You have to share them. Sometimes it’s kind of hard,” said Akers on working around the many activities that keep students busy. Between all of the different activities the students participate in, and dealing with illness, Akers isn’t sure the entire cast has been present at any one time for practice.
“Watching it come together,” is one of the most rewarding aspects Akers told me. She said that handing them scripts and the struggles of reading through it initially, then getting to the point of being on stage and seeing it take shape.
