Phyllis DeYoung, 88, of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Accura Healthcare in Knoxville, Iowa, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 2, 1935, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Alvin and Grace (Garrett) Wright.
In high school, Phyllis showed her diverse talents by participating in the school band, basketball team, and cheerleading. She graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1954.
On January 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Roger DeYoung in Delta.
Following their marriage the couple relocated to Georgia, where Roger served in the Air Force. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Oskaloosa.
Phyllis went to work at Spurgeon’s. She then went and worked at Lynn’s Hatchery, Preferred Risk Insurance in Van Meter, and then transitioned into part-time work.
In their youth she and Roger enjoyed going roller skating. She enjoyed sewing, cake decorating, and traveling with Roger. She especially looked forward to trips to Branson with her family.
Her family includes her daughters, Shirley (Vernie “Bud”) Nance of Knoxville and Carol (Shawn) Taylor of Des Moines; three grandchildren Shawn (Alicia) Nance, Aaron (Kristin) Nance, and Jill Gomez; nine great-grandchildren, Alexis Caleb, Brooke, Kyziah, Cesilya, Ira, Grace, Natalia, and Sasha; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roger on November 26, 2020; her parents, 3 sisters, Laura Mae Hoover, Dora Stanley, Betty Hejda, and one brother, Dale Wright.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Charlie McMillian officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
