Our Job Approval Poll Results

Osky News

Oskaloosa, Iowa- Recently, we asked you to vote on the approval rating of our local governments. We ran a poll for several weeks and ended up receiving some interesting numbers.  We asked you to rate various governments on a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best.

One of the remarkable things with the polls is seeing a general satisfaction with local government in comparison to some of the state and federal numbers.

After running the poll for several weeks, we added up the approval rating from the unscientific polls with the results as follows:

  • Oskaloosa Mayor – 66% approval rating
  • Oskaloosa City Council – 48% approval rating
  • Mahaska County Supervisors – 55% approval rating
  • Oskaloosa School Board – 52% approval rating
  • Beacon Mayor – 62% approval rating
  • Beacon City Council – 67% approval rating
  • University Park Mayor – 82% approval rating
  • University Park City Council – 67% approval rating

According to the results, those that responded gave the Mayor of University Park the highest approval rating. Out of the local governing bodies, the Oskaloosa City Council scored the lowest.

During the poll, the question of the state and federal governing bodies was also asked.

  • Governor of Iowa – 56% approval rating
  • Legislature of Iowa – 45% approval rating
  • President of the United States – 43% approval rating
  • United States Congress – 23% approval rating

We also had you identify yourself as either a Republican, Democrat, Independent, Other, or No Party. 49 residents responded with 19 residents (39%) identifying as an Independent, 18 residents (37%) identifying as a Republican, 10 residents (20%) identifying as a Democrat, one resident (2%) identifying as other and one resident (2%) identifying ad None on the Above.

We also had you identify yourself again except we changed up the categories slightly. 46 residents voted with 21 residents (46%) identifying as a Conservative, 16 residents (35%) identifying as a moderate, 4 residents (9%) identifying as none, 3 residents (7%) identifying as other, and three residents (7%) identifying as a Liberal.

According to those responding to our poll on Congress, the 23% approval rating is slightly higher than the 12.7 approval rating (according to Real Clear Politics) that the rest of the country gives the governing body. The 43% approval rating to President Obama is very near the 44.4% approval rating Obama has from Real Clear Politics average of polls, making our little poll very comparable to national averages.
