Osky Drive Time About To Change

Oskaloosa, Iowa – That familiar voice over KBOE covering news and sports is about to change. Scott Dailey will be putting on his last show Thursday evening.

Dailey, who says “I’m taking a line from LeBron James and taking my talents to West Des Moines.” His wife works on the south side of Des Moines and with a new family member on the way, this will give them more of an opportunity to be a family; especially with a new baby. “December 5th Alexis Lee Dailey will be born”, Scott says with a smile. “Not for sure if she’s gonna be into music like mommy or into sports like daddy. Sure, hopefully we’ll get a mix of both”.

I wanted to know some of the positive things Scott will be taking away from his time in Oskaloosa. “The sports around here is just great. Big time support. Met a lot of great people through the sports; great parents. I remember back in ’04, I started at the end of softball season. I got to be friends with the Ford family, and Taylor was a senior that year on the basketball team. It was fun watching her play. Just seeing how the community’s passionate about it’s teams”.

Scott won’t be in broadcasting when he leaves Oskaloosa and KBOE. With the new family member on the way, “I kind of want a normal life, normal schedule” I’ve been doing it for 14 years, and I haven’t had really, like a normal 9 to 5 schedule. So it’s kind of time to step back, do something a little less involved, so I can be there once my daughter is born and just be around her”.

Scott says his interest in sports broadcasting started when he was 7 or 8 years old, “sitting there watching games on TV or playing video games and doing play by play with it.”

Some interesting people that Scott remembers along the way are Burdette Brown who encouraged Scott to coach. He also remembers Dave Beaty who was the Athletic Director in Oskaloosa the first couple of years he was at KBOE. “I’ll never forget, every time he’d call up and I would never have a pen around and he would say ‘Dangit Dailey! Get a pen, I’ve got something you need to write down.’ I’ll just never forget that”, Scott says smiling and laughing remembering some of those fun times.

As a fellow media person, some places you go are just really nice; some are not so nice. I was pretty sure that press boxes run nearly the same way. “Do you want to count games where it was kind of made to be a press box, cause if that’s the case, I did a playoff 8-man football game years ago. I was on a 25 foot scaffold, with no roof, 20 mph winds, and it was raining that night. So it doesn’t get much worse than that”.

And of course there are always those places you like to go, “Probably my favorite places to go is Centerville, and that’s just because their concession stand is probably the best I’ve been to. I learned that early on in my radio career. First thing I ever covered for an actual paying radio station was a college basketball tournament. The guy I was doing the game with took me back to the media area. It was a full buffet. You see all these guys just kind of sitting there and their all pretty much heavy set and everything, and he says, now you see why they do radio or they are in the media”. Scott says that now every new stadium one of the first things he has to do is to see what the concession stand has available.

I have spent the last year seeing Scott around at various events. He has always been most professional and I wish him the best of luck in the future. – Ken
