City of Oskaloosa reminds citizens of no leaf pick up this year

Oskaloosa Iowa City Hall

City Hall - Oskaloosa, Iowa

The City of Oskaloosa is reminding residents that they will not be doing leaf pick up this year. Below we have put a public notice from the City of Oskaloosa website.

Due to departmental budget restraints, the City of Oskaloosa Street Department will not be providing leaf pickup service in 2010. In lieu of the leaf pickup service, the available funds will be used for street maintenance purposes such as seal coat and pothole filling materials, and concrete for road repairs.

Residents can bring their leaves and limbs to a drop off site located at the end of High Avenue West, commonly known as the “city snow dump.” Leaves can be dumped at the site in bulk form or dropped off in one bushel, paper, biodegradable bags that are made especially for the disposal of green waste. These bags can be purchased at local hardware, building supply, and some grocery stores. Private firms in the City also perform this service and can be contracted to collect your bulk leaves or limbs.

Residents who blow or rake leaves onto City streets are in violation of the Oskaloosa Municipal Code, Ordinance 12.08.020 or 12.08.030, and complaints will be forwarded to the Police Department. Leaf piles in the street are a danger to children who like to play in the piles and in many areas reduce the traffic to one lane or cause drivers to drive around the piles into oncoming traffic. Leaves that are raked or swept into the road can also cause water blockage and damage to the city’s storm water sewer lines. This blockage or damage can lead to backups, additional maintenance costs and the expensive repairs.

The drop off site for leaves and limbs is open 24 hours a day for convenience. Residents are requested to only dispose of leaves and limbs in the appropriate designated areas.

The City of Oskaloosa will not be responsible for any damage or injury to people, vehicles, or equipment resulting in the unloading or loading of debris and products.
