Oskaloosa Middle School Students Get First Hand Lesson In Elections
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The home room of Mr. Bisher was one of many home room spots around OMS to see the political process happen first hand. His 7th period class had their election to choose their representative to the student council on Friday afternoon.
There were four candidates who had gotten the required signatures by not only their peers, but also by teachers. The speeches started of with Jacob Spears.
Jacob Spears started off by talking about his reliability. “Well I am reliable. You can be assured I will not fail.” He went on to assure class members that, “that your fun days will be more fun every time. I would be a great leader for the class and I love to make choices,” Spears said.
Candace Allsup was next to speak. She spoke about a past student council member who was recently elected to the Oskaloosa School Board, Charlie Comfort. “I believe that a person can make a difference when they are young, and I would like to make a difference in our schools.” She continued on by saying, “And I want to be the voice of the students and I want to make sure the right decisions are being made for the students and the school.”
The third to speak was Cameron Lanphier. “I would be a good choice for student council because I will listen to your concerns and complaints.” She continued on by saying, “I will try to make all events an interest to everyone. I will not favor one person’s ideas over another, and I will listen to what’s important to you, all of you.”
Jack Miller next took his turn to present his speech to the class. “I would really like to be your student council representative. I promise if I’m elected to work hard on student council activities. I will also do my best to organize fun events for everyone. I think it is important to help out others. I want to work on community projects and do my part to make Oskaloosa a better place”.
When the votes had been tallied at the end of the voting process, the winner was Jacob Spears. He will now represent Mr. Bisher’s home room on the student council.
