Crews began staging equipment this past week in order to begin construction on the new Oskaloosa fire station.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The stage is being set for construction to begin after the Oskaloosa City Council approved the expenditure of $2.8 million dollars to DDVI Incorporated to oversee the construction and renovation of the Oskaloosa Fire Station.

The first step for crews will be to replace a sewer system that runs down the alley north of the planned building. A transformer belonging to MidAmerican Energy will also be moved in the early stages of the project.

The fire station addition will have four apparatus bays and a maintenance pit.

The need for an updated fire station started when the building used by both the fire department and water department became unsafe, and was then demolished.

The plans for the fire station began development in 2012, and the bond measure was passed by voters in November of 2014.

A rejection of the original bids took place in September of 2015 when the bids were nearly a million dollars higher than expected. Certain elements of the project were reevaluated, and the contract winner this time was five percent higher than planned.

The council approved the project, and once the contract was signed, the contractor then has 425 days to finish the project, including the renovation of the existing fire station.
