Oskaloosa City Council Sets Budget Public Hearing

Oskaloosa, Iowa- The Oskaloosa City Council met in regular session Monday evening with Mayor Krutzfeldt presiding. The first item on the agenda was the issue of approving a request from the Chamber of Commerce for approval of the Friday after Five events. The request was approved unanimously. The next item was a request from the Rollin’ Oldies Car Club for approval of their annual show. The proposed date and location is Saturday July 28th on the downtown streets. The request was approved unanimously.

The next request came from the Mahaska County Relay for Life Committee. The committee was requesting approval of their annual event ,with some changes. The request indicated that the proposed event is to be held on the town square, however it will not be an overnight event. The proposal indicated that the event will be held on June 2nd beginning at noon and ending at midnight. The request was also approved unanimously.

The Council next unanimously approved the appointments of Dan Karow to the Building Code Board of Appeals and Doug Yates to the Enterprise Zone Commission. The Council next unanimously approved setting a public hearing for March 5th, 2012 as the date of a public hearing relating to the city budget. It was indicated in City Council information that the overall proposed tax levy is a decrease from $.97473. After the public hearing was set, the council heard a presentation from City Manager Mike Schrock regarding the budget.

The next items on the agenda related to the approval of residential and commercial tax abatements. Both were approved unanimously. The next item on the agenda was that of authorizing the mayor to sign and submit the 2011 Trolley Place Housing Enterprise Zone report to the state. The motion to authorize the mayor to submit the report was unanimously approved. The final item on the agenda was a resolution approving a sponsorship and submittal of a business financial assistance application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority on behalf of Clow Valve Company. City Council information indicated that the proposal would create six new jobs in the area.

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council will be held on March 5th, 2012 at 6:30 PM in the City Council Chambers.
