Opal Septer, 96, of Brooklyn and formerly of Montezuma, passed away Wednesday evening, July 6, 2022 at the Brooklyn Community Estates. Opal Mae Septer, the daughter of Leo and Mabel (White) Rhinehart, was born on May 4, 1926 near Brooklyn, Iowa.
Opal graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1944.
On June 2, 1945, Opal was united in marriage to Marvin Montgomery in Norman, Oklahoma on a Naval Base while Marvin was serving his country. To this union three children were born, Jerry, Judy and Joan.
Opal taught country school for a couple of years until Marvin returned home from his service where they farmed together north of Brooklyn.
Marvin passed away in 1986 and Opal was then married to Paul Septer on May 4, 1989 where she became a preacher’s wife for over 27 years.
Faith and her relationship with Jesus Christ was very important to Opal. She was a prayer warrior to many, left a legacy of faith to her family and friends, had a compassionate heart and opened her home to many.
Opal loved to garden and always had her hands in the dirt growing beautiful flowers and had amazing gardens. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Opal was a competitive game player and a champion croquet player.
She will always be remembered for two of her favorite quotes, “Busy hands are happy hands,” and “There’s nothing prettier than an Iowa corn field.” She was a faithful member and worker of the Faith Christian Center.
She is survived by her children: Jerry (& Donna) Montgomery of Altoona, Judy (& Ron) Sullivan of Oklahoma City, OK., Joan Bonnett of Brooklyn, Pam (& Denny) Broadston of Montezuma, Glen Septer of Grinnell, Trena (& Kelly) Septer of Oskaloosa and Faith (& Mick) Fisher of Oskaloosa; 15 grandchildren; numerous great grand-children; her sisters, Marilyn Dickson of Poulsbo, WA., and Janet (& Orlin) Smith of Weatherford, OK; her sister-in-law, Marian Rhinehart of Brooklyn; as well as many other friends and relatives.
Opal is preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin Montgomery and Paul Septer; her brothers: Charles (& Beth) Rhinehart, Jim (& Helga) Rhinehart, and Wallace Rhinehart; her son-in-law, Boyd Bonnett; and her brother-in-law, Gordon Dickson.
Celebration of Life will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Faith Christian Center in Montezuma.
A reception/luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
A private burial will be held in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery at a later time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Christian Center.
